Author Chuck Parrish will speak about the history of the U.S. Lifesaving Station at the December 7 program of the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society. Parrish wrote Heroes of the Falls with Dr. Leland Johnson, an account of the station at the Falls of the Ohio from 1882-1972. Before modern locks and dams, the large ragged rocks of the Falls threatened boats and passengers, crews, and shipments. Under the careful watch of the Lifesaving Station, river disasters were prevented, and many boats, cargo, and lives saved.
A “meet and mingle” with light refreshments will begin at 6:45 PM with program at 7 PM in the Strassweg Auditorium of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 W. Spring St., New Albany, Indiana. For more information, please visit sigsweb.org or call Donna Kepley Foster at 812-923-3492.
